Spine Juice

floral spine

floral spineThis week, I’m hanging out with high school students in the Young Writers Institute with the Western Pennsylvania Writing Project. For three hours every day, we’ve been writing together. These students are writing me raw, helping me remember why I love writing, how cathartic writing is, how fun it is, and how beautiful it is to write in community. I’m so excited to do it again next week!

Today, I led a workshop on yoga and writing, and this poem came out of it.

Today my spine feels rickety
as if any
number of its rungs
might fall
as my consciousness
steps up
its nervous ladder.

With breath I send
oxygen.
a spinal cocktail
inviting
my spine to regenerate
breath.
